Why Watch Orpheus Descending
Why Watch Orpheus Descending
Written by the legendary playwright Tennessee Williams, Orpheus Descending is a retelling of the story of Orpheus, albeit set in the south of the USA. A 2-time Pulitzer Prize and 3-time New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award winner, Williams is known for focusing on themes of family, mental health and relationships. A majority of his plays continue to be showcased across the world, and Williams is considered to be amongst the most eminent playwrights of 20th century America. Orpheus Descending deals with repression and recovery, and the director, Tamara Harvey is renowned for her ability to portray relatable scenarios and characters. Jonathan Fensom, an Olivier and Tony Award winner, captures the essence of Williams’ imagery wonderfully and is a worthy testament to Tennessee Williams.
