Chicago is among the most well-recognized shows in both Broadway and West End. The musical has won six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy to top it all during its long tenure on the world stage. In fact, it is one of the longest running American musicals in West End history, managing to consistently grip audiences for over 15 years!

Why Watch Chicago

Chicago is, by no means, a new show. It is based on Maurine Watkins’ 1926 play of the same name. The play constantly evolved through the decades to become the spectacular musical that it is today. It debuted in West End in 1979, but remained dormant until the mid 1990s. In 1996, a revived version of this musical burst back into the spotlight and ran for an astoundingly long time. The musical is set to premiere at West End’s Phoenix Theatre. With jazz music that will fly you straight back to the early and mid-20th century, Chicago is filled with treats for the music-lover in you. If you are looking for a musical with a unique flavor, or a classic drama with a beautiful story, or even if you are simply somebody who enjoyed the 2002 flick that also won an Academy Award, Chicago is sure to take you on an unforgettable rollercoaster ride.

The Story

Set in an era in which America completely banned the production of alcohol, Chicago is littered with acts of corruption and betrayal, serving as the underlying themes of the story. Velma Kelly, a woman who murdered her husband and sister, kicks off the musical with a popular rendition of the song “All That Jazz”. Velma is arrested, and so is Roxie, another woman accused of murdering her lover. Velma and Roxie are sent to Cook County Jail, where they meet the corrupt Matron “Mama” Morton. With her aid, Velma has been pushed to the top of the media’s murder-of-the-week announcement. Matron Morton is also helping Velma return to Vaudeville. Bill Flynn, an eminent lawyer with an all-girl clientele, decides to help Roxie. Velma is not particularly pleased about the fact that Roxie is taking away both her spotlight and lawyer. Roxie and Velma are pulled apart and glued together over and over again in this magical representation of ‘celebrity crime’.
