Why Watch White Pearl
Why Watch White Pearl
Nothing that has once been uploaded onto the internet can be removed without a trace; White Pearl is play that delves deep into the consequences of such an action. The underlying themes of espionage, casual racism and toxic culture in corporate entities are tackled in the play through the brilliant use of black humor and dark comedy. This also marks the debut of Anchuli Felicia King, a New York based playwright, who showcases the depths of her talent through this incredibly layered play. King is of Thai-Australian descent, and she is able to effectively portray the complexity of South-East Asian companies and culture and its stark contrast to western society. Nana Dakin, whose work on Wild Goose Dreams was met with acclaim, is directing King’s play. Her ability to depict the tense PR nightmare has been praised by critics and audience alike.
Thought-provoking and brutal, White Pearl is exactly what is wrong with the advertising strategies of corporate entities across the globe. The dark side of companies and the alarming nonchalance about racism unless met with outrage from the public is spectacularly portrayed in this play.
