Auguste Rodin is considered to be one of the most prolific sculptors in history due to his ability to capture turbulent emotion in stone. In homage, the Musée Rodin in Paris houses an impressive collection of his best creations. Here are some pieces you cannot miss during your visit:

The Thinker

This male figure perched atop a rock is frequently used as a symbol of the introspective act. While this figure was conceptualized as part of The Gates of Hell, this bronze recasting was done in 1904. Lost in deep thought and contemplation, some critics believe that the thinker was originally named The Poet, as Rodin may have intended this figure to represent Dante at the gates of hell, contemplating his great poem.

The Kiss

Although this embracing couple was originally meant to be a part of The Gates of Hell, they were later replaced with another pair of lovers located on the smaller right-hand column. Rodin initially titled the piece Francesca da Rimini, after the 13th-century Italian noblewoman in Dante's Inferno, who is depicted embracing her lover Paolo. Although the piece is titled The Kiss, the sculpted lovers' lips actually do not meet, suggesting that they were discovered and met their demise without ever actually sharing a kiss.

The Burghers of Calais

This piece commemorates a historic moment during the Hundred Years' War. As the story goes, when Calais surrendered to the English after a siege that lasted 11 months, England’s Edward III offered to spare the people if 6 of the city’s leaders would surrender for execution. It was demanded that the 6 volunteers walk out with nooses around their necks while carrying the keys to the city and castle. This envoy of 6 burghers was led by Saint Pierre to the city gates. Although they were later spared from execution, it is this moment of defeat and heroic self-sacrifice that Rodin captured in this sculpture.

Eternal Springtime

Reportedly, Rodin originally planned for this piece to be a part of The Gates of Hell. However, he later felt that the happiness expressed by the two lovers in the sculpture didn’t fit with the theme of the imposing depiction of hell from Dante’s Inferno. Although the female figure in this composition was modeled after Adele Abruzzesi, it has been speculated that the figure was also heavily influenced by Camille Claudel – who was Rodin’s romantic interest at the time.

The Gates of Hell

This monumental bronze sculpture depicts a scene from Dante’s Inferno. At 6 meters high, this breath-taking piece contains 180 individual figures, ranging from 15 centimeters to over a meter in height. Several of these figures have also been cast as free-standing statues. It is said that Rodin worked on this project on and off, for around 37 years, until his death in 1917. He wanted viewers to experience Dante’s description of hell as they walked up to the piece.
