Exteriors
The large column in front of the Pantheon is known as the “Monolith of Aswan.” They are gray granite monoliths quarried from faraway lands of Aswan, and Egypt. Each of these monoliths measure more than 24 feet in height and have a girth of almost seven feet. These massive pieces of stone were transported to Italy via boat and then dragged on land for over 500 miles.
Rotunda
The dome of the Pantheon (rotunda) is unique because it uses no wood for support. It is instead supported by eight massive pillars which are over 32 feet in circumference. The diameter of each of these pillars was unbeaten by any structure during its time. This allowed for completely open space underneath for construction workers to operate on plumbing pipes and electrical lines without being obstructed by large wooden beams. The height of this room is its most impressive feature; the tallest point in the room is over 147 feet high.
Interior
As you enter, you will be presented with the enormous dome of circles and squares unifying the roof while checkerboard patterns dominate the floor. Since the opening (oculus) allows rainwater to pass through, the ground is built with an incline of 30 centimeters to drain the water. The oculus at the top also allows light to pass through and creates a reverse sundial, where time is measured by light instead of shadows.
