Why You Shouldn't Miss This
The modern history of Barcelona and that of prime Art Nouveau cannot be separated from each other. Once a controversial movement that separated dramatically from the Neo-Gothic and Baroque preferences of Western Europe, Art Nouveau designs dominate Barcelona’s landmarks. The movement is epitomised best by the Modernista architect Antoni Gaudí and his magnum opus, the Sagrada Familia. A monument that requires no introduction, the Sagrada Familia stands tall in the heart of Barcelona and is one of the most renowned structures in Europe. Under construction since 1882, the Sagrada Familia is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Private Tour will also take you to the Hospital de Sant Pau, the largest art nouveau site in the world. Designed by the Catalan Modernisme architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Hospital de Sant Pau now houses academic institutions such as the United Nations University and the Casa Asia. As your guide acquaints you with the structure's unique design elements, you will be able to better understand the influences and effects of Art Nouveau on the city Barcelona.
The private tour begins at the beautiful Hospital de Sant Pau. The building was designed by Modernisme architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and was finished in 1930. The expansive monument covers nine city blocks and was an active hospital until the 1990s. It underwent five years of renovation and restoration in order to house institutions such as the United Nations University and the Casa Asia. The Hospital de Sant Pau now stands as the largest art nouveau site in the world and is a sight to behold. If you wish, you can also purchase tickets on site to go inside the Hospital de Sant Pau and explore the interiors.
After the tour of the Hospital de Sant Pau, your expert guide will take you to the famed Sagrada Familia, a short ten-minute walk from the Hospital de Sant Pau. With priority access to the basilica, you will be able to bypass the long ticket lines and head straight to the Sagrada Familia. The Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882 and almost a century after a death of its designer, Antoni Gaudi, the Sagrada Familia is still a decade away from completion. Even in its incomplete state, the Sagrada Familia is the most important works of architecture in Europe and a wonder of the Western world.
On your private tour of the Sagrada Familia, you will learn about the symbolism, design, and the aesthetics of the Sagrada Familia and its position in the greater Modernisme movement as a whole. You will learn how Gaudi pushed the limits of the movement beyond its norm with the Sagrada Familia. Your guide will give you detailed insights into the elaborate façades and dreamy interiors, as well as the symbolisms that were a product of Gaudi’s religious inclination.
