    Why Watch Caesar and Cleopatra

Written by one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century, George Bernard Shaw, Caesar and Cleopatra premiered in 1898. A winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925, Shaw wrote more than 60 plays and was the leading dramatist of his generation. A well-known political activist, Shaw’s early works centre on themes of empire and imperialism. Caesar and Cleopatra, set in Ancient Egypt, is a fictional take on the relationship between Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. Caesar and Cleopatra is an epic comedy of two of history’s most shrewd and intelligent characters. Shaw aimed to prove that it was political prowess that drew the two together rather than love.

David Staller is in charge of the direction and is one of the most noted performers and directors on the New York stage. He has directed all 65 plays of Shaw, including his last unfinished work. A longtime fan of Shaw, Staller brings forth the masterpiece to the New York stage after nearly 40 years. Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Robert Cuccioli, Brenda Braxton, and Teresa Avia Lim, Staller’s production is guaranteed to entertain audiences thoroughly!

    The Story

Cleopatra is vying for power and the Egyptian throne, which is currently in the hands of her brother, Ptolemy. Julius Caesar, the Roman dictator has just landed on the shores of Egypt and is all set to invade the country. The guards plan to persuade Caesar to proclaim Cleopatra as the ruler of Egypt instead of Ptolemy, but they cannot seem to locate her and are told that she has run away.

In the desert, Caesar comes across Cleopatra, who is sleeping beneath a sphinx. Cleopatra is unaware of Caesar’s true identity and tells him about her fear of the Romans and their leader, Caesar. She tags along with him to the palace, and only realized his true identity when he is hailed by the guards.

Will Caesar trust Cleopatra with the Egyptian throne and mentor the young, beautiful and ambitious woman? Will this alliance prove to be the first straw leading to the death of Caesar?
