Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel

Relish the legend of Jack the Ripper brought back to life at West End, albeit from a new and equally terrifying perspective! Can a group of working-class women survive the dangerous times in an emotionally-laden opera performance that is guaranteed to take your breath away?

Why Watch Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel

Jack the Ripper is the name given to the unidentified killer who was responsible for the death of at least 5 women in the Whitechapel district of London in the late 1800s. Although the name originated from someone claiming to be the killer, it stuck in the minds of the people and solidified the legend. Iain Bell, an eminent composer known for vocal works brings the legend back to life in a breathtaking opera performance. With a libretto by Emma Jenkins, staff director for the English National Opera, explore themes of community and its power in fighting against the odds. The mythical serial killer is seen through a modern lens, and through the emotionally touching the vocal and orchestral writing, Iain Bell guarantees an unforgettable night for the audience. The score transitions from mercurial and powerful music to stirring harmonies seamlessly, and is a testament to the skill of the singers and Bell.

The Story

The story is set in 1888 when the dreaded serial killer was active in the Whitechapel area of London. Since the unidentified assailant targeted just women, the ladies of the Whitechapel district come together as a community to survive these dangerous times. The hypocritical attitude of a so-called “respectable” society is questioned, as the women struggle against all odds. Can the determination of this close-knit group ensure that they get through the terror that stalks the streets at night?
