On the night of the 26th and 27th of October 2002, because of the violent paroxysmal activity of the volcano on the northern slope of Linguaglossa, several earthquakes took place. This led to Etna's reawakening after a 15-month respite. All of Piano Provenzana and its tourist buildings were submerged by the flowing lava, and several roads were ripped apart. This was the devastating effect of Mount Etna's eruption.

On this tour, you will start from Piano Provenzana. Make your way to the very craters from which the most important eruptions took place over the last few decades. You will get to pass by the flow from these craters a few meters away along a path that runs next to the lava channel. Spectacular is an understatement here. See the magma mass that invaded and destroyed the ancient Ragabo Pine Grove, too. From here, you will head back to Piano Provenzana.

Important Information

Recommended equipment: Closed shoes, an anti-wind and anti-rain jacket, hat, backpack, and layered clothing for the various temperatures that are possible to find during the excursion.
You can avail round-trip ascent and descent by a 4x4 vehicle at an extra cost on-site.
