The Inheritance: About The Show<\/h2>\n

The Inheritance is a two-part play with each part running into more than three hours. The magnum opus is inspired from E.M. Forster\u2019s Howards End but has also been likened to Angels in America. The play is written by Matthew Lopez who is known for his works \u2013 The Whipping Man, Somewhere, Reverberation, and The Legend of Georgia McBride. Inheritance has been extraordinarily directed for the stage by Stephen Daldry who is known for his recent work having produced and directed the Netflix special \u2018The Crown\u2019. He has a fantastic record of having directed plays like Billy Elliot the Musical, An Inspector Calls, The Audience and movies like the Hours, The Reader, and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.<\/p>\n

Inheritance has already garnered critical acclaim and audience adulation during its stint at West End. It has also swept the 2019 Laurence Olivier Awards and won for Best New Play, Best Actor (Kyle Soller), Best Director, and Best Lighting Design (Jon Clark). The play has struck a chord with audiences of several generations who find themselves delving into their own familial histories and connection with inheritances. The Inheritance deals with the lives of gay New Yorkers over decades and the way each generation dealt with the HIV and AIDS epidemic. The inter-generational issues and challenges of how these men learnt to cope with loss, life and love. Watch this once in a lifetime show that is playing this fall!<\/p>\n

The Inheritance: Broadway Story<\/h2>\n

The Inheritance borrows the structure and premise of the story from E.M. Forster\u2019s Howards End. The Part 1 of the play follows the journey of a young gay New Yorker, Eric Glass, who finds himself propagating left-leaning ideologies and aiming for a cultured idyllic life. He is in a relationship with long time partner, Toby, who is a narcissist novelist working towards converting it into a script. They both live in a rent-controlled Upper West Side apartment, which Eric inherited from his family. This is just one of the first \u2018inheritances\u2019 showcased in the play.<\/p>\n

Eric and Toby discuss marriage but their life is peppered with people walking in and out of their life. A new entrant to their life is Adam, who is an actor working in the play written by Toby. Toby finds himself drawn to Adam, and that\u2019s where the trouble starts to foment. Part 1 is all about their relationship and how they navigate it.<\/p>\n

Part 2 of Inheritance starts with Eric and Toby having different partners. Eric in the previous part had depended on Walter, who was a sick gay older man who helped him cope with the breakup from Toby. Since then, Walter has passed away but Eric is now involved with Henry, who was Walter\u2019s partner. In this part, Eric has to deal with the inheritance of the property left to him by Walter, where Walter had helped out people suffering from HIV and AIDS. The rest of the play focuses on what Eric does with the inheritance and coming to terms with the suffering of the previous generations and figuring out his own legacy.<\/p>\n
