The Arena Di Verona is the oldest functional amphitheater in the world. Much of this is attributed to its stable and enduring architecture. Here are something you can’t miss out on seeing while you’re there.

The Facade

Much of the facade of the Arena Di Verona is intact. This imposing facade is a testament to the sophisticated engineering of the Romans. The facade is composed of two massive circular arcades made of white and pink limestone. These circular arcades of arches and pillars wind around the entire structure to give it's iconic colosseum-like appearance.

The Interior

The interior is made up of two main parts: the arena located in the center and the outer corridors. When you gaze at the arena, imagine ancient gladiators fighting valiantly. You will also notice levels of dark corridors that run the entire perimeter of the structure that provided people passage to access different parts of the amphitheater.

Performances

The first performance to be held in Arena post its transfer to the Italian state  Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, in 1913. Since then the Verona Arena hosts concerts, operas, and ballets every summer with shows packed in every day. Operas such as Aida, Turandot, Carmen, and Nabucco are very popular.

Stones from the Post-Classical Era

Remember that when you sit on a stone seat at the Arena, you are sitting on a stone that possibly dates back over two thousand years. The stones used in the Arena’s construction were extracted from Valpolicella Valley around 20km from the city. The stones are limestone extracted from the Lessini Mountains and were used because of their compact and resistant qualities.
